Caring for people

Equality and respect
HANDED BY refers to the fact that all of our products are produced by hand. In Thailand, China and more recently, in Vietnam. Three countries combine a centuries-old tradition in craft techniques with typically Asian traditions and customs and that is something that demands respect, understanding and patience. What we were setting out to achieve were honest and personal partnerships with small businesses that share our idea of conquering the world with traditionally-produced baskets, bags and other items that are made from as large a proportion of recycled materials as possible. Our primary concern was to build up long-term relationships based upon trust and equality. We have developed that trust on a gradual basis. By investing large amounts of money in training, knowledge and quality, we have now become the exclusive buyer from a core group of loyal suppliers.

A realistic wage
We offer regular work to around 150 qualified craftswomen, women who have a real passion for their work and are highly committed to HANDED BY. All of our craftspeople work in healthy and hygienic surroundings in a light room and are paid a fair wage. The fact that were are in a position to guarantee regular employment means that our craftswomen are able to make significant progress when it comes to providing healthcare, safe housing and education for their families and communities.

Absolutely no child labour
Every four to six weeks we visit our craft workshops in order to discuss developments with regard to products and materials, to carry out quality checks, to inspect working conditions and to maintain our collaboration. What this means is that we are able to provide a guarantee that no child labour is used during the manufacturing of our products. After all, the very fact that the women are able to find employment during school hours means that the children are able to attend school.
